What Is Perfect Practice?

Take two minutes and see how it works — and what happens when practice finally clicks.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You run a piece from the top and hope it "clicks."
  • You make progress one day — and lose it the next.
  • You nail it at home, then fall apart on stage.
  • You try tips from videos, but nothing really sticks.
  • You practice a lot, yet barely feel yourself improving.
  • You leave practice more frustrated than when you started.

If any or all of this resonates with you, you’re not alone. I’ve been there.
It’s why I started studying the science of learning, and my method can help.

Perfect Practice™

Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect Practice™ does.

Each lesson is pre-recorded, so you go at your own pace. You'll watch, then I’ll guide you minute by minute through your practice step by step — accompanied by written guides to make it easy to take straight into your own routine. And if you need it, you can revisit the video and have me coach you through it again. Nothing is left to chance.

You'll practice on your own for a few days, then move to the next lesson, which refines what you've built and strategically drops in new ideas so you improve again.

The difference is my proprietary Cognitive Load Reduction Protocol™. I manage cognitive load in specific ways so that anyone, from beginners to pro players, stays engaged at their own level — understanding each step and moving forward.

It creates a foundation that will grow and stay flexible for the rest of your practicing life.

You'll also get PDFs and a weekly written Practice Guide to follow during your practice.

And you'll receive a bonus two-month subscription to our monthly Practiclass™ (for new subscribers) — a live two-hour masterclass where you'll see these techniques applied with all kinds of players and can ask your own questions in the second hour, so you keep building on what you've learned.

Here’s what you’ll get

Each week is one short session with the video that will include real-time guided practice. Then we take that home for at least 10 minutes, for four more days that week before the next session. You can do more if you like.

8 weeks to Practizen.

Create the kind of focused, productive, time-melts-off-the-clock practice you've never had before — a flow state you can reach in days and keep for the rest of your playing life.

Week 1
We start with the mysterious art of spaced repetition by using one short segment you choose from your music.
That creates little pockets of time in which we can place interleaving.
You will enjoy results in the first few days, then after the first week, and beyond, with just this initial practice structure.
It will serve you for all of your practice to come, and we will do all of our subsequent learning for this course within it.
We’ll spend the first four sessions gradually easing into, and refining, this.

Week 2
Add a small new element to our spacing, and begin applying expanding retrieval schedules.
We will simultaneously ‘review and do’ all of the elements of the first week in real time. In this way, we’ll be able to double check what we have been learning.
These methods are unusual and it is easy to get off-task on our own, so we’ll check each week to make sure we are on track.

Week 3
The expanding retrieval schedule is now fully operational.
We will spend time getting used to practicing that this week, as well as adding a few, small, new elements.

Week 4
Our basic practice structure is complete. We will review everything, and begin the first phase of improving the sections that have already improved dramatically! Paradoxically, it starts by not practicing it at all!

Week 5
Now we will turn our newfound ability to learn more quickly, to learning how to incorporate deliberate practice. Like spacing – it is simple to understand, but hard to get right in practice.
We’ll go through the same process we did to learn spacing. We’ll use the segments we’ve put through spacing.
They have improved greatly, and some sound great right now. We’ll learn how to find, on our own, what to do next for those that still need to improve!
We will continue using spacing and interleaving in our practice.

Week 6
We dig deeper into our ability to focus and use deliberate practice.

Week 7

Introducing contextual interference – it does for our technique what steroids do for athletes, and without any negative side effects. We’ll drop this technique into our established interleaving schedule.

Week 8
Reviewing all of our spacing and deliberate practice learned so far, and adding additional elements to contextual interference.

MODULES 1-4

RETRIEVAL PRACTICE

We build a complete practice structure using spacing, interleaving, and expanding retrieval. Working with short segments you choose, this structure produces results quickly and becomes the foundation for all practice in the course.

MODULES 5-6

Deliberate Practice

We use this structure to learn how to practice deliberately. Using the same segments, we learn how to focus, identify what still needs to improve, and decide what to work on next, while continuing to use spacing and interleaving.

Week 5

MODULES 7-8

Contextual Interference

We add contextual interference to the existing interleaving schedule, reviewing everything learned so far while strengthening technique and long-term improvement.

Week 7
Introducing contextual interference – it does for our technique what steroids do for athletes, and without any negative side effects. We’ll drop this technique into our established interleaving schedule.

Week 8
Reviewing all of our spacing and deliberate practice learned so far, and adding additional elements to contextual interference.

Better practice works at every stage of the musical journey:

Edward C.
Violin Performance Major, Florida State University

"It's truly amazing how many times you can hear the right things but still doubt how right they are...that combination of the psychology, the method, and then the process made me a believer in about half an hour...A summer in Aspen didn't fix some of the problems I've begun to truly remedy in just a week."

Jan B.
Piano Player

"I was on the verge of tears of joy by the end of the session. You uncovered the cause of several issues I'd struggled with in performance for years. I was afraid to trust myself enough to just play — and now I do."

Karen V.
Ukulele Player

"On Day 3, I played it through — from memory, no holes, no significant problems. I was astounded. I walked around the rest of the day with a huge smile. Why did I doubt you?"

“When he has students experience what it feels like to get better than they ever thought they could, and how to do more and more of it in their practice, there is an excitement that runs through them, and fuels the kind of work any teacher wants in their students. Highly recommended!”

Clinical Psychologist, Australia

“As a psychologist, I can say he is certainly on the money when it comes to incorporating the latest neuropsychological research findings into his work.”

I'm Gregg Goodhart —
The Learning Coach.

For 13 years, I built and chaired a music department at one of the most prestigious high schools in the country. I was always searching for the best possible information for my students and my teachers, and I went looking where few do: cognitive and neuro science. What I found there changed everything — I started applying it in the classroom, saw results I hadn't seen in years of teaching the "normal" way, and I was already an award winning teacher! I’ve spent the rest of my career refining it into a method anyone can use.

I wrote Cracking the Talent Code to put those ideas on the page.
Perfect Practice™ is where I put them in your hands.
